Threshing Day Release Date: What's Confirmed, What It Isn't, and What to Reread (Rebecca Yarros, Sept 29, 2026)
Threshing Day, Rebecca Yarros’s next Empyrean book, releases on September 29, 2026. It is thirteen stories set on a single day, Xaden’s story is confirmed to be in it, and — the part the fandom keeps tripping over — it is not Book Four. This guide separates what is actually confirmed (and by whom) from what is being repeated, then gives you an honest reread plan for the twenty-four days left.
One rule for the whole article: everything called “confirmed” below comes from three places — the author’s own site, the official Threshing Day site, and the retailer listing. Anything reported secondhand is labeled as such.

What it is not
The official site says it plainly, and the phrasing was clearly chosen with care: “a companion collection, not the continuation of Violet and Xaden’s story after Onyx Storm.” The cliffhanger you have been sitting with since Onyx Storm is not resolved here. Whatever Xaden’s story is, it is a Threshing Day story, and Threshing Day is in the past.
Why the distinction matters: open Threshing Day expecting Book Four and you will read thirteen good stories and feel cheated. Open it knowing it is a day-in-the-life collection about characters you already love and you will read the same thirteen stories and feel fed. The book does not change. Your expectation does.
About “as usual, will be up on my website”
Read that phrase literally. It means Yarros has posted bonus material on her own site before and intends to again. It does not say free, it does not say when, and it does not say the story will be online before the book is out. If any of those are announced, that is new information; this page will be updated when it exists.
The deluxe first edition
The listing describes it as including “sixteen beautiful original full-color illustrations by artist Joe Requeza.” Sixteen plates in a roughly two-hundred-page book is a lot of art, and it is the first Empyrean book built this way. The fine print: the deluxe first edition is listed as available exclusively in the US and Canada while supplies last. Nobody has said how many were printed. Historically, “while supplies last” on a Yarros first edition has meant not long. Preorders are open through the author’s site.
What nobody knows yet (as of September 5, 2026)
- No full blurb — the retailer listing literally says “Full blurb to be revealed soon.”
- No official character list beyond Xaden.
- Nothing stated about content or spice level.
- No Book Four date, and no Book Four title.
- No word on whether Xaden’s story goes up on her site before or after the 29th.
About the character rumours. Fan sites have lists. Traced back, they come down to an Instagram post of the author’s niece reading, a caption that ends mid-sentence, and inferences from the announcement reel. That is teasing, and teasing is fun, but it is not confirmation. This article names one character. When the blurb drops, we will publish the list, with sources.
What to reread before September 29
Twenty-four days is enough time if you are strategic. Here is the order and how much of each you actually need. (Full series order: Fourth Wing books in order.)
- Fourth Wing (2023) — reread the first third. That is Threshing Day: conscription, the parapet, the Gauntlet, and the field where the dragons choose. Every one of the thirteen stories is standing somewhere in those chapters. You do not need the back half of the book for this.
- Iron Flame (2023) — skim for the side characters. A companion collection is where side characters get their turn. Skim for the people you liked in the background: the squad, the instructors, the riders whose dragons you remember better than their surnames.
- Onyx Storm (2025) — reread the ending, then let it go. Threshing Day is not going to resolve it. Going in with that ending in your hands and expecting the next page is the fastest way to be disappointed by a book that never claimed to be that page.
- Threshing Day (Sept 29) — read it as a day, not a sequel. Thirteen sets of eyes on the moment the series began.
The honest time budget: the first third of Fourth Wing is an evening; a skim of Iron Flame for the side cast is a weekend; the ending of Onyx Storm is an hour. That is the whole prep.
How to read a story collection (if you usually read novels)
- Don’t binge it — one or two stories a sitting, or they blur.
- Let each story end before you reach for the next.
- In each one, notice who is not the narrator. In a companion collection the pleasure is watching a scene you know from the other side.
