Reading Order
Jack Reacher Books in Order
Quick answer
Read the Jack Reacher books in publication order, starting with Killing Floor (1997). There are 30 novels as of October 2026; the newest is Exit Strategy (2025), and book 31, Chain Reaction, is scheduled for October 20, 2026. Lee Child wrote books 1–24 alone; since The Sentinel (2020) he has co-written them with his brother Andrew Child. Every novel is a standalone case, so you can jump in anywhere, but publication order is the cleanest route. If you want Reacher's life in sequence instead, read the four Army-era books first: The Enemy, The Secret, Night School and The Affair.
Jack Reacher is a former Army military police major who left the service, owns nothing but a folding toothbrush, and drifts across America by bus and thumb. Trouble finds him in every town. That premise has carried a series for almost thirty years, and it is why the books work in any order: no novel needs the one before it. Below is the full list, the timeline order, the short stories, and what is on screen.

| 29 | In Too Deep | 2024 | He wakes up handcuffed to a table with no memory of how he got there. |
| 30 | Exit Strategy | 2025 | Reacher has three stops to make in one day, and not all of them go as planned. |
| 31 | Chain Reaction | Oct 20, 2026 | General Susan Turner asks for help after a member of her team is murdered; the trail leads to a tiny Colorado town full of data centers. |
One quirk: 61 Hours, Worth Dying For, A Wanted Man and Never Go Back form a loose four-book run. Reacher spends them trying to reach Virginia after a phone friendship with Major Susan Turner, the officer now in charge of his old unit. They still stand alone as cases, but they read best back to back. Turner returns in Chain Reaction.
Jack Reacher Books in Chronological Order
Reacher's timeline differs from the publishing order because Lee Child kept stepping back into his Army years. If you want the story of his life from MP major to drifter, read:
- The Enemy (2004): opens on New Year's Eve 1989, with Reacher still in uniform.
- The Secret (2023): set in 1992, during his time in the military police.
- Night School (2016): set in 1996, mostly in Hamburg.
- The Affair (2011): set in March 1997, six months before Killing Floor, and explains why he leaves the Army.
- Killing Floor (1997) and everything after it, in publication order.
The short stories go back further still. "Second Son" shows Reacher at 13 on a military base, and the novella "High Heat" puts him in New York City at 16 during the 1977 blackout. Both are in No Middle Name.
Where to Start (and Which Order We Recommend)
Start with Killing Floor, then read in publication order. The first book sets up Reacher's rules, his habits and his brother Joe, and the prequels hit harder once you know the drifter he turns into. The Affair in particular is written to be read after Killing Floor: it builds toward the bus ride that opens book one.
If you came from the TV show and want the season-1 story first, Killing Floor still wins. Want a sample before committing to 30 books? Try One Shot or 61 Hours, both often named fan favorites, or The Enemy for Reacher as an investigator inside the Army system.
If you like the drifter-with-a-code formula, our David Baldacci reading order covers Amos Decker and John Puller (Puller is a closer Reacher match), and our best Tom Clancy books guide is the right next stop for military thrillers on a bigger scale.
What's Next: The New Jack Reacher Book
Confirmed Chain Reaction, Reacher #31 by Lee Child and Andrew Child, publishes October 20, 2026. General Susan Turner asks Reacher for help after a member of her team is murdered, and the case takes him to Summertown, Colorado (Penguin Random House UK's Dead Good Books series list; Collider, 2026).
Not confirmed No title or date has been announced for a 32nd novel as of October 2026. The series has published one novel a year since 1997 (two in 2010), so another in fall 2027 would fit the pattern, but that is a guess, not an announcement.
Short Stories and Novellas
The easiest way to read the short fiction is No Middle Name (2017), which collects twelve pieces: the novellas "High Heat" and "Too Much Time," plus "Second Son," "Deep Down," "Small Wars," "Guy Walks into a Bar," "James Penney's New Identity," "Not a Drill," "Everyone Talks," "Maybe They Have a Tradition," "No Room at the Motel" and "The Picture of the Lonely Diner." Many were first sold as ebook singles. You can read the collection at any point; nothing in it spoils the novels.
A few later stories have appeared outside the collection as ebook singles and magazine pieces. They are extras, not required reading.
Reacher on Screen: TV Series and Films
Only confirmed facts here. The Prime Video series stars Alan Ritchson, a much closer physical match for the 6'5" Reacher of the books than the films' Tom Cruise.
| Adaptation | Released | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| Jack Reacher (film, Tom Cruise) | 2012 | One Shot (#9) |
| Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (film) | 2016 | Never Go Back (#18) |
| Reacher season 1 (Prime Video) | February 2022 | Killing Floor (#1) |
| Reacher season 2 | December 2023 | Bad Luck and Trouble (#11) |
| Reacher season 3 | February 2025 | Persuader (#7) |
| Reacher season 4 | August 12, 2026 | Gone Tomorrow (#13) |
Confirmed Prime Video renewed Reacher for a fifth season in May 2026. A spinoff, Neagley, starring Maria Sten as Reacher's former Army colleague Frances Neagley, arrived on Prime Video on September 16, 2026, the same day as the season 4 finale.
Not confirmed Prime Video has not officially said which novel season 5 will adapt. Fan sites name candidates; treat them as guesses until the studio announces it.
Watching the show first will not spoil much: each season covers one novel, and the show reshuffles some details. If you plan to read Gone Tomorrow, read it before season 4.

What is the first Jack Reacher book?
Killing Floor (1997). It is also the best starting point: it introduces Reacher as a drifter and the first season of the Prime Video show adapts it.
