Reading Order
Bridgerton Books in Order
Quick answer
Read Julia Quinn's Bridgerton books in publication order, starting with The Duke and I (2000). There are eight novels, one for each Bridgerton sibling, ending with On the Way to the Wedding (2006), then the Happily Ever After epilogues (2013). The Netflix show does not follow book order: season 3 adapted book 4 (Colin), season 4 adapted book 3 (Benedict), and seasons 5 and 6 are set to follow Francesca, then Eloise, the reverse of books 5 and 6.
Below are the Bridgerton books in order with years and the sibling each one follows, then the companion books (the second epilogues, the Rokesby prequels and Queen Charlotte), and a season-by-season map of the Netflix show against the novels. Bridgerton Books in Order
The eight Bridgerton siblings are named alphabetically, Anthony to Hyacinth, and Quinn gave each one a book. Each novel is a complete romance with its own couple, set in the 1810s and 1820s, and Lady Whistledown's gossip column opens every chapter in the early books.
| # | Title | Year | Sibling | Hook (no spoilers) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Duke and I | 2000 | Daphne | Daphne and the Duke of Hastings agree to a fake courtship that suits them both. Season 1. |
| 2 | The Viscount Who Loved Me | 2000 | Anthony | The eldest brother picks a sensible bride; her older sister, Kate Sheffield, objects. Season 2. |
| 3 | An Offer from a Gentleman | 2001 | Benedict | A masquerade ball, a mystery woman and a Regency Cinderella story. Season 4. |
| 4 | Romancing Mister Bridgerton | 2002 | Colin | Penelope Featherington has loved her best friend's brother for years. Season 3. |
| 5 | To Sir Phillip, With Love | 2003 | Eloise | Eloise leaves London to meet the widowed botanist she has been writing to. |
| 6 | When He Was Wicked | 2004 | Francesca | Francesca and Michael Stirling, her husband's cousin. The most emotionally serious of the eight. |
| 7 | It's in His Kiss | 2005 | Hyacinth | The youngest sister helps Gareth St. Clair translate a family diary written in Italian. |
| 8 | On the Way to the Wedding | 2006 | Gregory | The romantic youngest brother falls hard for the wrong woman, with help from her friend Lucy. |
After book 8, read The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After (2013). It collects a "second epilogue" for each novel, set years after its ending, plus a novella about Violet Bridgerton, the siblings' mother. Read each epilogue only after its matching book, as every one assumes you know how that story ends.
Book Order vs Show Order
This is where most readers get tripped up. Netflix's Bridgerton started in book order and then changed it:
- Seasons 1 and 2 follow books 1 and 2: Daphne, then Anthony.
- Season 3 jumped to book 4, Romancing Mister Bridgerton (Colin and Penelope).
- Season 4 went back to book 3, An Offer from a Gentleman (Benedict).
- Seasons 5 and 6 are set to follow Francesca, then Eloise, the reverse of books 5 and 6.
Our advice is to read in book order regardless. The novels were written to be read that way: later books mention earlier weddings and children, and the family timeline only lines up in book order. If you have watched the show and want to read only the next season's book first, that works too, since each novel stands on its own.
The show also changes details within each story, most visibly in Francesca's book: the series introduced Michaela Stirling, a gender-swapped version of the novel's Michael Stirling. Expect the books to differ from the screen in plot, timeline and characters.

Where to Start
Start with The Duke and I. It introduces the whole family, Lady Whistledown and the Regency London season the later books build on. If you have already watched season 1 and want something new, start with book 2, The Viscount Who Loved Me. Many readers rank it and Romancing Mister Bridgerton as the high points of the series.
If you are reading ahead of the show, When He Was Wicked (book 6) is the next Netflix story. It is also the most different in tone: slower, sadder and more grown-up than the earlier books.
The Rokesby Prequels
Quinn's Rokesby series is set a generation before The Duke and I, in the late 1770s and 1780s, and follows the Bridgertons' neighbours, the Rokesbys of Kent. Several heroines are Bridgertons of the earlier generation, so it doubles as a family prequel.
| # | Title | Year | Hook (no spoilers) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Because of Miss Bridgerton | 2016 | Billie Bridgerton and George Rokesby, neighbours who have never got along. |
| 2 | The Girl with the Make-Believe Husband | 2017 | Cecilia Harcourt and Edward Rokesby, in New York during the American Revolution. |
| 3 | The Other Miss Bridgerton | 2018 | Poppy Bridgerton and a sea captain who does not want a passenger. |
| 4 | First Comes Scandal | 2020 | Georgiana Bridgerton and Nicholas Rokesby, and a marriage of convenience. |
Read them after the main eight. They are written to stand alone, but the pleasure is in spotting the family's ancestors.
Queen Charlotte and Other Companion Books
- Queen Charlotte: Before Bridgerton Came an Epic Love Story (2023), co-written by Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes. It tells the story of the young Charlotte's marriage to King George III and was written from the Netflix prequel series, not the other way around. Queen Charlotte is a show invention; she does not appear in Quinn's original novels. Read it any time.
- The Further Observations of Lady Whistledown and Lady Whistledown Strikes Back. Two anthologies of linked novellas written by Quinn with three other romance authors, framed by Whistledown's column. Optional extras.

Chronological Order
If you want the family story from earliest to latest setting, the order is: Queen Charlotte (mostly set in 1761), the four Rokesby books, the eight Bridgerton novels, then the second epilogues. We do not recommend it for a first read, because the prequels lean on the reader already knowing the family.

Bridgerton Books FAQ
What order should I read the Bridgerton books in?
Publication order: The Duke and I, The Viscount Who Loved Me, An Offer from a Gentleman, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, To Sir Phillip, With Love, When He Was Wicked, It's in His Kiss, On the Way to the Wedding, then The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After.
How many Bridgerton books are there?
Eight main novels, one for each sibling, published from 2000 to 2006, plus the 2013 second-epilogues collection. The four Rokesby prequels and the 2023 Queen Charlotte novel are companion books.
Which Bridgerton book is season 4 based on?
An Offer from a Gentleman, Benedict's book and the third novel in the series. Season 4 was released in two parts on January 29 and February 26, 2026.
Why is the show's order different from the books?
The show adapted Colin's book (book 4) in season 3 and Benedict's (book 3) in season 4, and Netflix has said season 5 follows Francesca and season 6 Eloise, the reverse of books 5 and 6. Each novel stands on its own, so you can read them in either order, but book order keeps the family timeline straight.
Do I need to read the Rokesby books first?
No. The Rokesby series is set a generation earlier and was written after the main eight. Read it after the Bridgerton novels, when the family names mean something.
Is the Queen Charlotte book part of the Bridgerton series?
It is a companion novel written by Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes from the Netflix series. Queen Charlotte appears only in the show, not in Quinn's original eight books.
Can I read the Bridgerton books out of order?
Yes. Each book has its own couple and a complete story. Later books do mention earlier marriages, and the second epilogues assume you have read the matching novel.
